I enjoy debate because it supplements and satisfies my curiosity of the events that take place around me. Learning debate has taught me the lens of perspective and overcoming prejudices. Debate has taught me that oftentimes, the mark separation from top speaker to 10th placed speaker to 100th placed speaker is usually only different by a few arbitrary numbers a judge might have scribbled on a board, usually only separated by 5-10 average points. This taught me to live life the way you win a tournament: Disregard your opponents, no matter who good or bad you may think they are, and just do your job. Now, I feel comfortable entering competitive environments, despite how "godlike" any opposition may seem. I also draw a lot of pride in breaking preconceptions in people, which is why I find the fact that I represent debate in a public school to be so rewarding. I'd like to foster debate as much as I can in places with limited resources, and I hope to make public school debate a big thing if I ever get the opportunity.
