Debate, Writing, Speech Camp Overview

This Debate, Writing and Speech class is a transformative 2 week program that empowers students to grow as confident, articulate communicators. Through an integrated curriculum of debate, public speaking, and academic writing, students will develop essential skills that go far beyond the classroom.

Unlike typical debate camps, this program focuses on building real-life communication excellence – helping students thrive in school, on stage, and in their future careers.

By the end of the camp, students will be able to:

  • Deliver structured, persuasive debate speeches in impromptu formats
  • Write with clarity and purpose in academic, creative, and professional contexts (essays, research papers, university applications)
  • Speak with confidence and charisma in presentations, interviews, and competitions
  • Understand how speaking and writing reinforce each other to build a full-spectrum communication skillset

Debate Summer Camp Overview

This comprehensive debate course series is designed to guide students from foundational skills through to advanced competitive debating. The curriculum is structured into three distinct levels, each tailored to build upon the previous stage, ensuring a gradual and thorough development of debate skills.

Foundations Debate Camp: This entry-level course provides a solid base in debate fundamentals. Students will learn essential debate formats, speech and argument structure, rebuttal techniques, public speaking skills, basic note-taking, and foundational argument generation. This course ensures that students develop a strong understanding of the basics, preparing them for more advanced concepts.

Intermediate Debate Camp: Building on the foundational skills, this course focuses on refining debate techniques and introducing more complex strategies. Students will engage in strategic argument selection, advanced analysis and rebuttal, improving argument quality, and applying frameworks. This course also emphasizes the importance of presentation style and strategic use of personas, helping students enhance their debate performance and prepare for higher-level competitions.

Higher Level Debate Camp: Designed for competitive debaters aiming for top-level success, this course prepares students for major Canadian, American, and international tournaments. It includes intensive training tailored to specific tournaments, such as the popular Public Forum format. Students will receive personalized guidance from top coaches, focusing on high-level skills like principled argumentation, meta-debating, and effective use of examples. Entry requires a coach recommendation and a try-out session, ensuring that students are well-prepared for competitive success.

For the Ten to Win classes, as long as your child has some basic debate experience, they are welcome to join. We offer a free placement evaluation—feel free to call us at 604-366-6269 to speak with our course advisor.

A: Definitely. Each session features updated topics and new motions. Even if your child has taken the course before, they will continue to gain fresh insights and skills.

A: Vancouver Debate Academy (VDA) stands out with over 8 years of hands-on teaching experience and a skill-based curriculum. This means our students are trained to excel in various debate formats and competitions, not just limited to one. Whether it’s World Schools Debate, American Public Forum (PF), or other styles, our students are equipped to handle them all. In contrast, many other debate institutions focus on teaching only one specific debate format.

Our curriculum is meticulously crafted by our co-founder and debate director, both of whom have over 20 years of educational experience and hold teaching certifications. This ensures that our programs are not only effective but also grounded in educational expertise. On the other hand, many other debate schools rely on debaters to design their curriculum. While these debaters may excel in competitions, they often lack formal teaching qualifications, which can limit the depth and breadth of their instruction. At VDA, we prioritize comprehensive skill development to prepare students for long-term success in debates and beyond.
