Extension (or “Extending”)

General Definition: Repeating an argument or evidence from a previous speech in order to provide additional context, analysis, or weighing. In BP, a new argument presented by the member speech that provides a unique perspective from the front half.

  • Public Forum: see general definition.
  • World Schools Debate: In WSD, extension is done in rebuilding/reconstruction.
  • British Parliamentary: In BP, the MG and MO are required to give an extension argument that hasn’t been made by OG or OO. Ideally, extensions are entirely new arguments that address unique issues in the round. Practically, these can also be “depth” extensions, which pick up an underdeveloped idea or subpoint from the opening half and develop it fully, or develop arguments in a substantially different direction.
  • Canadian National Debate Format: In CNDF, extension is done in rebuilding/reconstruction.
